If horses are your passion and you want to make them a career, you could take a few different routes. Firstly, you could be hired by someone to look after their horses and stables; this would bring you a regular income. However, someone would employ you, and therefore you would have to work hours given to you.

Secondly, you could own horses that race. This can be costly to set up, and you may need people to look after your horses for you. Owning racehorses would be a fantastic option for someone who has a lot of disposable income.

Thirdly, you could start your riding school. Below, we will discuss some ways you can start your own riding school and things you may want to consider.

Land

The first thing you will need before owning a horse is some land. On this land, you will need to build a horse menage. Here is everything to consider when having a horse menage built

The first and most important thing to consider is the size. You need your land to be big enough to house your horses and have a large enough space for exercise. Both your horses and riders will need to be comfortable moving around and riding, so there must be enough space for this, too.

Your school needs to have different options for students and horses to train, learn jumps, and practice how to avoid different obstacles to participate in shows.

Property

You will need indoor space or stables for your horses, somewhere they can be during colder months or to be safe from wild animals or bad weather. You will also need an indoor training center where your horse and students can learn the basics.

Any indoor area will need to be big enough for the horse to be comfortable moving around and for your students to be comfortable riding.

You may need a house or office building for your staff or yourself to have breaks and stay in if necessary. This land will be necessary if you have this land separate from your own home. However, if you are building your menage onto your land, you may find you do not need this and can accommodate any breaks within your home.

Even building this on the same land as your home you may find an extra building for storing things will be helpful.

Staff

Having a riding school is not the same as having a horse that you can ride on. You will need to have qualified instructors to help you train students. You can get training yourself to become a teacher and this would be recommended if you want to own the school.

However, it is possible to hire someone to do this for you. You may also want to have a stable hand or two and maybe someone to help keep track of finances. Running a horse menage alone is a big task.

Summary

Having your own business can be an amazing way to make what you love a career, but it is important to remember to budget for any big change in your life. Having your own stable or horse riding school could be the perfect career for you and your family. Plan with companies you trust and work within your budget.
