One of the largest privately owned Consulting Engineering Practices in the UK is moving into offices at Plymouth Science Park.

Fairhurst is a multi-award winning business which employs a contingent of more than 500 highly qualified and experienced Engineers and specialist technical staff.

The company has built up an outstanding reputation having provided engineering support and specialist skills on some of the most significant private and public sector building and infrastructure projects seen in the UK.

These have included major highways, ports, rail and London Underground projects together with building developments for residential, recreational, commercial, industrial, health and educational use.

‘Whilst working on projects of national significance, Fairhurst’s regional offices recognise the needs of smaller scale developers and domestic Clients,’ explains Technical Director, Daniel Kennard.

‘We are keen to support all projects from inception to delivery, looking to provide excellent value engineered solutions for the benefit of our Clients.’

With more than 15 regional offices around the UK, Fairhurst is capitalising on more than 100 years of experience by expanding further and opening its new branch in Plymouth.

‘We are a mainstream Engineering Consultancy, assisting Clients in design of projects, providing civil, structural, geo-environmental together with highways and transportation engineering services.’

‘We also additionally assist other specialist Health and Safety, Planning and Landscape design services from within the group.’

‘We like to work at the front end of projects so we can influence planning and design to ensure simplicity and safety in construction and to deliver best value and efficient results for our Clients.’

‘We advise Clients on practicalities to ensure a sustainable and durable design is achieved in accordance with the brief.’

The decision to site an office in the area is partly due to the outstanding reputation of the University of Plymouth’s Engineering Department.

‘We already employ several Graduates from the University of Plymouth,’ says Daniel. ‘Basing ourselves here provides an exciting opportunity for upcoming talented individuals in the city.’

An engineering firm with the expertise of Fairhurst is hugely beneficial to Plymouth as the city continues to expand, with buildings for the University and other commercial, industrial development.

There are also extensive plans for much needed housing development in the local vicinity.

It is expected that the operational base at PSP will grow to include 15 technical staff at the Derriford site by the end of 2020.

‘I’m genuinely excited to be in Plymouth as I have always admired the engineering achievements in the City, from Smeaton’s Tower to Brunel’s rail link into Cornwall and, of course, the Tamar Bridge.’
