SWH Group, in partnership with Plymouth City Council’s ‘Building Plymouth’ initiative, is due to open a ‘Job Shop’ at 107-109 Mayflower Street on 11th May.

The Job Shop, which is located at the site of the new Plymouth Coach Station, currently being built by SWH Civils, will serve as a resource for those who are interested in careers within the construction and the built environment sector. Representatives from the SWH Group, Building Plymouth, Plymouth Construction Training Group and Jobcentre Plus will be on hand to provide advice and guidance to jobseekers and career changers about the exciting opportunities in this diverse sector, enabling local people to access work experience, jobs, apprenticeships along with training. Job vacancies will also be advertised within the shop.

There are also plans to provide regular information sessions, CV writing workshops, interview preparation sessions and more to give jobseekers the best chance of success.

Anna Cooper, Project Skills Co-ordinator at SWH Group said: “We believe passionately in creating jobs within our local communities and already work closely with schools and youth groups across Devon, as well as local charities such as Inspiration in Custody to reach ex-offenders and The Royal Marines Charity to reach ex-forces personnel. These groups often don’t realise how many opportunities are available to them within the construction industry and just how rewarding a career there can be. This shop will help us to reach even more people and provide useful advice and guidance to help job seekers begin a career or resume rewarding employment.”

Emma Hewitt, Building Plymouth Skills Co-ordinator said: “Through working in partnership, we are aiming to increase the local availability of skills to take full advantage of the construction boom in the city. With thanks to the SWH Group, this physical Job Shop will more easily enable us to meet with local people, leading to connecting more people with employers whilst increasing awareness of careers in the exciting and diverse world of construction and the built environment.”

The Job Shop will be officially opened by Lesley Code, HR Strategic Business Partner of the SWH Group at 11am on 11th May with brief talks from SWH Group, Building Plymouth and Jobcentre Plus representatives explaining the services and facilities that will be on offer. Ed Coley, Head of Skills and Employability at Plymouth City Council and Cllr Tudor Evans, Labour leader of Plymouth City Council will also be attending and giving brief talks.

Following the opening, the Job Shop will be open Wednesdays – Fridays (excluding bank holidays), 10am – 12pm and can be found at 107-109 Mayflower Street, Plymouth, PL1 1SD.
