Directory launches for Fairtrade Fortnight

A new directory of businesses that supply Fairtrade goods in Plymouth is being launched as part of Fairtrade Fortnight (29 February – 13 March 2016).

The directory is one of a number of initiatives across the city to encourage people to buy Fairtrade goods throughout the fortnight.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Cooperatives and Housing for Plymouth City Council said: “I am very pleased to be able to launch the latest edition of the Fairtrade Directory. We were one of the earliest cities to be awarded Fairtrade status 12 years ago.

“As part of our ambition to make Plymouth a fairer city, we are committed to supporting Fairtrade initiatives within the city. The Fairtrade movement has gone from strength to strength and last year Plymouth celebrated eleven years of Fairtrade City status.”

In addition a range of local organisations across the city are holding events for Fairtrade Fortnight, including Plymouth University and a number of local schools.

Across the world, Fairtrade benefits the producers communities; providing equitable conditions for the farmers and their families, health care, education, maternity care, clean water and, most importantly, a fair price for the goods that can be reinvested in the land and its development.

Plymouth was awarded Fairtrade status in 2004 following a joint application by Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Global Justice Group, and the Plymouth and South West Cooperative Society. Plymouth University has been a Fairtrade University since 2009.
