The Lone Pine Club is a new play for children aged 7-12 and their families. The play follows a group of children having riotous adventures in the countryside. The production takes place inside a large tent (rain-proof!) pitched in the grounds of National Trust venues across the country.

The production is directed by Elizabeth Freestone. Elizabeth has been working as a director for 14 years. During her freelance theatre directing career she has worked the National Theatre and the RSC. She became Artistic Director of Pentabus in 2012.

The play is based on The Lone Pine Club books, a series of 20 books written between 1943 and 1975 following a group of children and their adventures. A couple of the books were set on Dartmoor, and one of those stories is featured in the play. Similar to Swallows and Amazons in feel, the central characters are David, Dickie, Mary and a girl called Peter. They form a secret club – the Lone Pine Club – and undertake to be the very best explorers they can. The cast is: Ed Hartland (The Importance of Being Earnest, St James Theatre) as David, Katherine Carlton (Much Ado About Nothing, Old Vic) as Mary, Tom Cawte (Waiting For Godot, Cockpit) as Dickie and Anya Collyer making her professional debut as Peter.

Alice Birch is an award winning playwright whose credits include Revolt at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Little Light at Theatre 503 and We Want You To Watch at the National Theatre. Ben Glasstone is the composer, and Stuart Angell, fresh from working on War Horse will be working with Elizabeth Freestone once again as movement director. Katie Lias (Lyric Hammersmith, Polka Theatre) is the designer.

The show is touring until 23 August nationally, and will be at Buckland Abbey from 6-9 August.
