We are delighted to present the work of Georgie Grace, Jennet Thomas and Serial Composition as part of this artist showcase. The artists were selected from the 2017 Plymouth Contemporary, a major Plymouth biennial exhibition hosted by Peninsula Arts and KARST.

They were recognised for presenting new and original ideas and pushing the boundaries of their field, which include film, animation, painting and drawing.

A Discipline of the Mind – The Travels of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham

Join us in the Studio Theatre at Plymouth College of Art for 'A Discipline of the Mind – The Travels of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’, a public lecture by Geoffrey Bertram, Chairman of the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, discussing Wilhelmina Barns-Graham as an artist and printmaker.

The event will begin at 5.00pm on Wednesday 24 January and marks the generous donation of a collection of six screenprints (made between 2000-2006), presented to the college by the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust in October 2017, and now part of the College’s permanent study collection.

PLAYBACK workshop: SCRATCH FILM

In this hands-on direct animation workshop, you will make your mark with paints, pens, bleach, scalpels and even old letraset transfers on a length of 16mm film stock – clear and black film leader, or even old archive 16mm films, which you will be able to re-author.

Lecturers and Imperfect Cinema hosts, Dr Allister Gall from Media Arts, Plymouth University and Dan Paolantonio, Film, Plymouth College of Art, are on hand to guide you through the creative collaborative process. This workshop is recommended for those aged between 16-18 years old.

Plymouth College of Art Pre Degree students aged 16 to 19 will be exhibiting and selling their original work as part of the twentieth annual Design to Sell event, held in the college’s Palace Court campus on Buckwell Street, beside the Barbican.

Design to Sell is a collaborative project involving students from the college’s range of Extended Diplomas hosting a public exhibition and pop-up shop where students can sell their work and gain valuable market exposure, as entrepreneurs and professional practitioners.

Talk: Representations of Wartime Sexual Violence in Renaissance Painting - Dr Péter Bokody

Rape of women and girls remains a widespread form of aggression against a civilian population during war and often the belief is that the universal condemnation and prosecution of these crimes is a relatively recent phenomenon.

However, critical representations of sexual violence were already created during the Italian Renaissance. The civic imagery developed in city-republics gives us a unique insight into the revolutionary understanding of gender-based aggression and a forgotten chapter in rape history.
