Work will be starting on Monday to create a new walking and cycling link between Paradise Road and Garfield Terrace.

The project, which has been developed in partnership between Plymouth City Council and Sustrans and supports the Plymotion initiative to improve walking and cycling links across the city, should be complete by the end of March.

All roads will be kept open for the duration of the work with the help of temporary traffic lights, but there may be minor delays to traffic along Collingwood Road from the junction with Garfield Terrace to Providence Place and around Kings Court. The footbridge between Providence Place and Kings Court will be closed temporarily, with pedestrians diverted along Paradise Road.

Councillor Mark Coker, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “More and more people are choosing to walk and cycle to get around the city. We are working hard to ensure there are routes and facilities that will enable even more people to leave their cars at home, by both improving existing routes and creating new ones to make journeys easier, safer and more pleasant.”

Adrian Roper, Sustrans’ South West Regional Director added: "I'm looking forward to seeing the completion of this network of walking and cycling routes in the south west of the city giving ever more people the opportunity to enjoy walking and cycling for every day journeys."

The work is being delivered by Plymouth Transport and Highways, the partnership between Plymouth City Council and Amey, which will also soon be starting work on pedestrian and cycle link improvements in the centre of North Cross and then at the train station. More information will be made available when start dates are confirmed.

The Plymotion initiative is funded by the Department for Transport, The Big Lottery Fund, Plymouth City Council and Sustrans to improve and create walking and cycling links connect the east and west of the city from Devonport and Stonehouse through to Plympton and Plymstock. The routes will use off-road links and quiet roads.
