Are you a golf fan taking a vacation in Plymouth or maybe travelling with work and have a little spare time?  Or maybe you live locally and want to take up the sport.  Then you will want to know where the best golf courses in Plymouth can be found – and here are four of our favourites.

Grab your golf bag and make sure you protect yourself from the elements because we do get a little rain here in Devon!

Staddon Heights Golf Club

Staddon Heights is located just a couple of miles outside the centre of Plymouth and is a stunning 18 hole cliff top course that has a par of 70 and a yardage of 6,164.  This course is a combination of great golf and great views with its location allowing you to play with a backdrop of Plymouth Sound, the city itself as well as Dartmoor and Bodmin Hills in the distance.

The club was founded back in 1904 when it was originally the United Services Golf Club.  It was purchased from the Ministry of Defence in the late 1960s and added two new holes for its 100th birthday.  In addition to the course, there is also the Pro Shop and a restaurant on site.

Boringdon Park Golf Club

Boringdon Park is just five minutes’ drive from the A38 and close to Plymouth with views across the Plymouth Sound in one direction and Dartmoor in the other.  The club has two courses, the Saltram Course which is a Par 73 with a number of par fives to challenge your game and four holes with water.  There is also the Estuary Course, which is a shorter, 9 hole course that is perfect for beginners or if you are short on time.

As well as the courses, there is also a driving range for some practice time.  The club has a restaurant, bar and café that are open to the public as well as conference and function facilities.

China Fleet Golf Club

China Fleet Golf Club is in Cornwall but just a 15 minute drive from Plymouth.  The course sits in parkland and was designed by Dr Martin Grant Hawtree to run alongside the River Tamar.  The course is a par 72 parkland course with water hazards and tree lined fairways to offer a good challenge for all levels of experience.

The club has its own pro shop for some last minute golf essentials and also a 22 bay floodlit driving range.  There are also practice areas for chipping greens and putting greens if you want to focus on a particular area of your game.  And if you are travelling with a non-golfer, the club also has a health centre with gym and also its own spa areas for them to enjoy while you are on the course.

Elfordleigh

Elfordleigh is a stunning country house in 120 acres of parkland on the edge of Dartmoor and is also home to an equally impressive golf course.  The location is perfect if you are visiting the area as it combines hotel, golf course, spa facilities and fine dining in a single location, just a short trip from Plymouth.

The course is an 18 hole mature parkland course that makes use of the natural beauty of the area.  It offers a good balance of features for all levels of experience.  If you are visiting around wintertime, you can also get a discount rate on green fees.

The best local courses

These are just four of the best local courses that are accessible when in Plymouth and show it is a great area to visit as a golfing fan – or of course to live as well!
