A new exhibition ‘Certaine Wytches’ - re-telis stories of the last three women executed for witchcraft in Devon - their witch-hunts and trials. This unusual show with themes of local history, folklore and superstition runs from 23 March – 6 May 2019 at Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Bovey tracey.

Textile artist Anne Jackson presents a solo show at the Guild inspired by the plaque in Rougemont Gardens, Exeter, in memory of ‘The Devon Witches’. “The Bideford Witches’’ were supposedly the last hung at Exeter Prison in the 1680s charged with sorcery or witchcraft. Anne has created striking large wall tapestries telling the stories of persecuted women – including others seen as outsiders and convicted in the UK and beyond. This unusual show explores the idea of witchcraft and witch-persecution and brings to life a dark period of European history with resonances of what is happening in contemporary societies. Alongside the thought provoking works visitors can see authentic historical artefacts from the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, Cornwall. Related events will include a conference about witchcraft and persecution, performances and workshops.

FREE. Open daily 10am-5.30pm.

Launch event: Friday 22 March 6-8pm, Guild gallery + Terrace Café (all welcome, just book for food: 01626 832223)
