Crowds turn out in their best for Ladies' Day at Newton Abbot

The sun was shining for St Austell Brewery’s Ladies’ Day at Newton Abbot Racecourse on Tuesday 25 June as crowds turned out for one of the most glamorous fixtures in the racing season.

Ladies and gentlemen donned their finery with the hope of walking away with the coveted title of Best Dressed Lady, Best Dressed Gent and Best Hat. The ever-popular competition saw thousands of attendees compete to be named winners, with judges scouring the racecourse for finalists throughout the afternoon.

After much deliberation, the lucky winners were announced as Julie Pratt, from Torquay as Best Dressed Lady; Fran Yau, also from Torquay, for Best Hat and Mark Wright, from Exeter as Best Dressed Gent.

Discussing this year’s event, Patrick Masterson, Managing Director at Newton Abbot Racecourse, commented: “Ladies’ Day this year was simply phenomenal. It’s always a popular fixture but this year it surpassed itself. The cheers coming from the grandstand as the horses approached the finishing line were tremendous and really added to the fantastic atmosphere on the night.”

“Special thanks must go to St Austell Brewery for sponsoring the event again this year, all of the other local companies that contributed to the evening and, of course, our racegoers, some of which went to great lengths to compete in the Best Dressed competitions.”

As summer has now officially begun, racing enthusiasts can look forward to seven fixtures at Newton Abbot during July and August with more great value ticket offers to make a day at the races more affordable for all.

July begins with two Monday fixtures on July 8th and 15th with racing fans able to enjoy two Paddock Enclosure tickets for the price of one when booked at least one week in advance. For those who are looking to leave the car behind, the ‘Come Racing by Train’ promotion offers a discounted train travel and racing ticket package for all afternoon fixtures, again available when booked at least one week in advance.

Later this summer sees the return of the family-friendly fixture celebrating the start of the summer holidays on Sunday 21st July with two pony races and the opening of the Family Enclosure.

August 3rd will see some of the top horses, jockeys and owners flock to the course for the richest fixture of the season with the racecourse’s self-funded £100k prize fund meeting. This is followed by two back-to-back evening fixtures on August 21st and 22nd, before the Summer Festival Weekend at Newton Abbot on Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September.
