As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2015, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust hosted an information open day, which welcomed sixth formers from schools across Plymouth, including St Boniface's Catholic College, Eggbuckland Community College, Lipson Community College and Ridgeway, into the hospital.

There were department stands and there were current and past apprentices at the event, allowing the students to gain a valuable insight into the opportunities available for apprenticeships at the Trust.
Mandy Johnson, Learning and Development Trainer, responsible for organising the Trust’s apprenticeship programme at Plymouth Hospitals, said: “The event was a resounding success! There was such a buzz and enthusiasm around the room and it was great to see the wave of young people, including those from local schools, being enthused by departments, Learn Direct and universities.

“The event was a great opportunity to share a valuable and practical insight, focused on inspiring the young people. It was lovely to see young people who have taken the apprenticeship route and how they have transformed. They shared what they have personally gained from taking the apprenticeship route and confidently presented how they are achieving their career aspirations and potential in the NHS.”

Richard Daulton, Employer and Delivery Services Manager from National Apprenticeship Service said: “I was thrilled to be involved with the open day at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust as part of National Apprenticeship Week. The day was a great success!

“The hospital’s apprentices and managers; from a range of functions including healthcare, IT, business administration, laboratory technicians; gave all those attending a practical and compelling insight into the opportunities and career openings that apprenticeships have provided.”

On Twitter, Eggbuckland Community College tweeted: “#NAW2015 Great visit to Derriford Hospital with Year 12 HSC students for health event. Fab to see ex ECC students succeeding in the workplace!”

The Trust has a very strong partnership working with training providers, including Learn Direct, who offer a bespoke administration training programme designed for each individual apprentice to help support their career, ensuring they get the most out of the opportunity for their personal development and future progression.
