Plymouth University is set to enhance its reputation as a centre of excellence for mathematics education with the launch of the International Centre for Statistical Education (ICSE).

The ICSE, set to launch in August 2014, will develop innovative projects that enhance statistical education in schools, colleges, universities and the workplace, as well as establishing a range of ‘tools’ and utilities that develop statistical understanding.

It will also conduct world class research in statistical education in support of new curriculum development, including post-16 statistics-related pathways and teacher training.

The ICSE will build on the award-winning work already carried out by the Royal Statistical Society’s Centre for Statistical Education, which has been based in Plymouth since 2009.

Professor Simon Handley, Acting Dean of Science and Environment at Plymouth University, said: “Plymouth University has an international reputation for its contribution to statistical education. Furthering the work of the CSE and the School of Computing and Mathematics, the ICSE will act as an enterprising provider of world class statistical education activities and resources. Through new and existing partnerships, it will aim to raise achievement and aspirational levels for people of all ages both nationally and internationally.”

In the past five years, the CSE has launched a number of pioneering initiatives including CensusAtSchool – created in conjunction with the Office for National Statistics, and now operating in nine countries. It was named Best Cooperative Project in Statistical Literacy by the International Association of Statistical Education and the International Statistical Literacy Project in 2013.

The CSE has also organised WinAtSchool, a UK-based online competition which aimed to present mathematics and statistics in a fun and exciting fashion, and Stats2013AtSchool, a world quiz open to school aged learners which aims to established a comprehensive picture of statistical education across the globe.

The Royal Statistical Society, as a leading professional body for statistics and statisticians, will continue to work with Plymouth University and the new ICSE on specific projects to push forward further improvements in how statistics is taught.
