Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust has announced that Neil Kemsley has been appointed as the new Director of Finance.

Neil joins Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust from NHS England South West where he has served as Finance Director since 2013.

Having worked for a range of NHS organisations, including primary care and acute trusts, Neil brings with him extensive experience. In particular he has held senior finance positions at United Bristol Healthcare Trust, University College London Hospitals, Kings College Hospitals and more recently Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, prior to taking up his current role at NHS England South West overseeing the region from Penzance to South Gloucestershire.

Neil said: “I am delighted to be joining Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust at what I can see is such an exciting time for the city, the Trust and the population we serve. Being present in the week the CQC report was published gave me such a powerful sense of the great pride the staff feel in being recognised as being outstanding for caring.

“I believe my more recent experiences will greatly benefit the Trust in our dealings with our regulators, commissioners and other key external partners.  Internally, building on the fantastic work done by Joe Teape, Phill Mantay and their teams. I am totally committed to ensuring that the corporate functions I am responsible for remain focused on always doing the right thing for our patients.”

Chief Executive of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, Ann James said: “I am delighted that Neil will be joining us at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. We were fortunate to have some very strong candidates for the role of Director of Finance and feel that with his strong background across a range of NHS organisations Neil will be a valuable addition to the Board at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.”

Neil’s appointment was made following a day of sequential panel interviews involving doctors, nurses and other health professionals and staff from the Trust.

Neil's official starting date with the Trust is still to be agreed although he is expecting to have some presence in the Trust from early September.
