Local star of radio and pantomime Douglas Mounce dies

The BBC have reported the death from cancer of the Radio Devon presenter Douglas ("Dougie") Mounce. He was 65.

A familiar voice across Devon's airwaves for nearly 30 years, Douglas Mounce also spent many seasons in pantomime, regularly playing the role of the dame and often spoke of his love for the stage.

He began broadcasting the popular Treasure Hunt programme for BBC Radio Devon when the station launched in 1983 and also worked for Radio Plymouth. He made several televison drama appearances alongside his commercials and corporate work.

His natural warmth and charm made him a popular host and compere for a variety of shows and events.

Tributes have been pouring in on Twitter from friends, colleagues and the public. Alan Dedicoat, a former colleague of Mounce's at Radio Devon, now a Radio 2 news presenter and the BBC's 'voice of the balls' for the National Lottery show, said he was "a broadcasting legend and a gentleman. His Treasure Hunt shows were radio magic. A great loss to the wireless and the South West."

A tribute posted on his website said: "He touched the hearts of so many people...this news will come as a shock to all that knew him."
