Closure Notices have been served today (Tuesday 23 June) on two shops in Plymouth which are believed to be selling ‘legal highs’.

The 48 hour closure notices were served on High Life in Cornwall Street and Damn Good Head Shop on Ebrington Street, under Section 86 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, new legislation that came into effect in October 2014. Devon and Cornwall Police has served the notice in conjunction with Plymouth City Council.

This follows complaints over a sustained period regarding antisocial behaviour, nuisance and disorder by clients attending the premises.

Following the serving of the notice a hearing will be held at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 25 June 2015.

Inspector Sally Hutchings said: “Dealing with issues highlighted to police and partners by the local community is critical to neighbourhood policing.

“We are taking proactive action following a number of allegations in relation to antisocial behaviour linked to legal highs in the city.

“The closures will last for 48 hours and we await the judgement of a local magistrate as to whether this will be extended further.”

Councillor Philippa Davey, Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities at Plymouth City Council said: “We are working closely with our partners in the police and the community to tackle the issue of legal highs in Plymouth.

“This will be the first court action in relation to the alleged sale of legal highs in the city so we will be interested to see the outcome of the court hearing.”
