It looks like no one is going to be flying anywhere far away this summer. With everything that is going on in the world right now, it may be a good idea to stay home anyway!

Thankfully, Devon is one of the most beautiful and picturesque parts of the world, especially in the summer months. There are plenty of things to see and do in Devon, and they’ll keep the kids entertained too. Big days out will be this summer’s package holiday, and big groups of families and friends are going to be hitting the local beaches and sunny spots of Devon in numbers never seen before!

Here are some great ideas for days out in Devon this summer, for families and groups of friends who want to make the most of our sunny days ahead.

The Dartmouth Steam Railway and South Devon Railway

The traditional Dartmouth Steam Railway is a great day out for kids, and train enthusiasts alike. The line runs between Paignton and Kingswear. The traditional steam train journey winds its way past seaside resorts with multi-coloured beach huts, and through the woodlands above the River Dart. You can make stops along the way to explore, and even carry on to Dartmouth from Kingswear on a foot ferry.

The South Devon Railway line travels through the heart of the Devonshire countryside from Buckfastleigh to Totnes, and gives you stunning views of Dartmoor.

Visit Powderham Castle

The manor house on the banks of the River Exe has been home to the Earls of Devon for seven centuries. This house and its grounds are a great place to be on a sunny day, and offers guided tours of its medieval history.

There are plenty of activities for kids too, with a play area and animal petting corner, and fun tractor trailer tours of the park, looking for groups of deer that live there. This is a great destination for large groups of friends and family.

The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth

The nation’s largest aquarium can be found near the harbour at Plymouth. This place fascinates adults and children alike and provides a full day of entertainment. It has the deepest Atlantic Ocean tank in the country that is filled with sharks and rays, and a number of entertaining and educational shows that you and your kids will love.

It is a great venue for big parties of people. If you are looking for coach hire for a big day out, then Coach Hire Direct has got you covered. They have a range of vehicles to suit any day trip and can take the stress of driving and parking out of the day for you, so you can concentrate on enjoying yourself.

Catch Some Sun at Blackpool Sands

There is no tower and fairground here, this isn’t the Blackpool of the North, but it is a beautifully maintained beach of fine shingle that has crisp and clear turquoise coloured waters.

This is a calm bay where people can enjoy paddling on the shore without being bothered by big waves, and you can hire canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards if you want to get out on the water. For a day out at the seaside, you should spend a day at Blackpool Sands.

With so much to see and do in Devon, why would you want to go anywhere else? Make the most of this summer, and explore this wonderful county.
