Local pub, the Brook Inn, Plympton, has been supporting its local community during the pandemic by launching ‘The Virtual Brook Inn’ for customers as well as working with Plympton Team Ministry to fulfil its food takeaway service.

The news, which comes after the Government requested the closure of all pubs, with the exception of those offering takeaway services, clearly demonstrates the continued desire and passion of publicans across the country to act as a hub for their communities.

Keeping the spirit of the pub alive during the pandemic, publican John Govier, launched the The Virtual Brook Inn through a new Facebook page to take all its weekly events online. Customers can have an evening out at the pub without having to leave home, where they can enjoy local live music, quizzes and even mindful art classes. In keeping with the virtual theme, the pub’s staff have been converted into cartoon styled versions of themselves.

As the local community follow advice to continue self-isolating, residents ofPlympton, Devon and the surrounding area, are able to order hot food for delivery or collection. Working with the Plympton Team Ministry, who is coordinating the orders and deliveries, John Govier, is cooking and packaging up the meals from the pub. It began with weekly Sunday Roast dinners, which were praised by locals, and they have now added a Midweek Meal Deal every Wednesday. The Brook Inn is providing the meals at cost price and all proceeds from the sales of the meals go towards support for the community within the PL7 postcode.

John Govier, the publican at the Brook Inn, which is part of the Ei Publican Partnerships estate said: “We have a great pub community including our staff and customers, so wanted to keep that connection going strong during this strange time of isolation. We really wanted it to be inclusive, so have made sure that all the events we usually host at the pub are now available online for those who want to get involved. It has been incredibly popular and it’s a wonderful way to stay in touch with our regulars. We are also proud to now be involved in the food takeaway service run by Plympton Team Ministry, as together we are going that bit further to make sure those vulnerable members of the community have access to some feel good meals a couple of times a week..”
