Free physiotherapy and NHS health checks, plus advice and information from a range of other health and wellbeing service providers, are coming to Plymouth on Friday 19th July as part of the SeaFit Programme for fishermen and their families.

Physiotherapists, healthy lifestyle advisors and mental health practitioners will be joining forces with local fishing training providers for a day of free health checks, information and advice. The event is being held down at Fish Quay on Sutton Harbour, from 7am – 2pm, so it’s easy and convenient for fishermen. And there’s no need to book – just turn up!
The SeaFit Programme is a joint initiative between the Seafarers Hospital Society and the Fishermen’s Mission, with funding from Seafarers UK. For the past twelve months SeaFit has been bringing health and wellbeing services direct to fishermen and their families in fishing ports across the UK, but this is the first time that SeaFit has run an event in Devon.

Explaining the thinking behind the initiative, Carol Elliott, Seafit Project Manager said: “We’re delighted to be bringing the SeaFit roadshow to Plymouth and look forward to meeting local seafarers. We’ve run similar events in Cornwall and East Yorkshire, but this is our first time in Devon. There’s been increasing demand for SeaFit to come to Plymouth and we were planning to run a drop-in physio session. But once people began to hear about the event, it just snowballed!”

The services coming to Plymouth for the day include:

  • Free physiotherapy for fishermen and merchant seafarers from Fay Pedlar Clinic
  • Healthy lifestyle advice and free NHS health checks from One You Plymouth
  • Mental health and wellbeing advice and information
  • Training advice and information from Western Maritime Training
  • Health and safety advice from Seafood Cornwall
  • Information, advice and support from the local Fishermen’s Mission
