The Renal Unit at Derriford Hospital have received a donation of £1,287 from a patient who teamed up with his local free house to host a charity race day.

Dubbed “Wacky Races”, the event lived up to its billing with teams from Boscastle and the surrounding areas racing down Penally Hill in homemade karts. The race concluded at the Cobweb Inn, where an auction and hog roast helped to increase the final total.

Renal patient Scott Butcher, his mother Deborah Bunt and Rachel Prideaux of the Cobweb Inn visited the unit to present the cheque to matron Jill Swales and members of the renal team. Matron Jill Swales said: “The Renal Unit are very grateful for generosity shown by the local community in Boscastle, as funds such as this allow the unit to purchase equipment which improves our patient’s stay and allows for greater comfort. All staff were impressed with the activities that had taken place and some will attempt to attend the next event.”

Scott’s mother Deborah said: “We would like to thank the local community of Boscastle and the Cobweb Inn for making the Wacky Races event a roaring success.

“People came from all over to take part and local businesses were very generous in donating auction items to a fantastic cause. Due to the success of this fundraiser, we are looking to repeat the event again in September”
