Two Plymouths join forces to promote local produce ahead of Mayflower 400 celebrations

A team of local representatives from Plymouth, including members of the Culture Board, City Council, Chamber and City College recently travelled to Plymouth, Massachusetts (MA) to meet with delegates to establish a partnership in a bid to strengthen links between the two cities in the lead up to the Mayflower 400th anniversary celebrations in 2020.

In addition to the anniversary of the Mayflower, establishing links between agricultural communities and local produce traders in the two cities was a core element of the trip and the Plymouth UK delegation visited Plymouth Farmers’ Market in Massachusetts.

Amanda Lumley, CEO of Destination Plymouth, UK was presented with a gift basket of local produce which she brought back in her suitcase all the way to the UK and then presented to Matthew Jones, Market Manager and Robert Hambridge, Assistant Market Manager. The basket included chilli sauce, chocolate fudge, peach jam and pickled beets as well as a small cowbell to symbolise a longstanding tradition of celebrating the opening of each weekly farmers market in Plymouth, Massachsetts with the ringing of the cowbell.

Lieza Dagher Co-Director of Plymouth Farmers' Market in Plymouth, MA said: "It was an honour to meet with the delegation from Plymouth UK during their visit to the US to discuss an important partnership for both destinations.

"We presented Destination Plymouth with a gift basket to take back to the Plymouth City Market Traders which included a small cowbell as a symbol of our ten-year strong tradition at Plymouth Farmers' Market of celebrating the opening of each weekly market with the resonating ring of the cowbell.

"Our team at the Plymouth Farmers' Market in Massachusetts sends our warm greetings to the agricultural community and market traders in Plymouth, UK and we look forward to working together in the future".

Plymouth, UK is dedicated to promoting local produce as it prepares to host Flavour Fest, one of the region’s largest local food markets, which takes place in the City Centre between August 16 and 18 this year.

Plymouth, UK hopes to continue to develop a prosperous working relationship with Plymouth, MA as both cities prepare to celebrate the Mayflower’s 400th anniversary and identify key products and services that link the two cities.
