As ballet superstar Carlos Acosta takes up the reins at Birmingham Royal Ballet, his critically-acclaimed company of Cuban dancers, Acosta Danza, embarks on a ten-venue nationwide tour of its latest programme, Evolution, coming to Theatre Royal Plymouth from Friday 27 – Saturday 28 March.
Evolution sees Acosta make a guest appearance in the iconic Rooster, choreographed by Christopher Bruce to music by the Rolling Stones. The company also perform new work; Paysage, Soudain, la nuit by visionary Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidberg. Inspired by Vaslav Nijinsky’s L’après midi d’un faune, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui completes the bill with masterpiece Faun, set to Debussy’s original score with additional music from Nitin Sawhney.
Acosta founded Acosta Danza in 2015 to, in his words, “create a company which didn’t look like any other company out there”, one which showcased Cuban performers and the vibrancy of Cuban culture. Evolution, produced by Sadler’s Wells and Valid Productions, is presented by Dance Consortium, a 20-strong group of member theatres with a commitment to bring the best international contemporary dance to audiences across the UK, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
The contemporary dance company founded by ballet superstar Carlos Acosta, is breaking boundaries in Havana and across the globe. Made up of the best of Cuba’s eclectic young dance talent, the company is known for its bold blend of dance styles.
Tickets for Acosta Danza can be booked online at www.theatreroyal.com or by calling the Theatre Royal Plymouth Box Office on 01752 267222. The Saturday performance will be audio-described for blind and visually-impaired patrons as one of seven on the tour.
