Dust a must for forthcoming art project

Do you have any dust going spare? Artist Catherine Bertola is asking local people for their help in completing her latest installation.

Catherine is one of six makers whose work will be featured in the ‘Acts of Making' festival, organised by the Crafts Council.

The 14-day festival will take place from Saturday 12 to Saturday 26 September at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Plymouth College of Art, Mount Edgcumbe and various other locations across the city.

Supported by Arts Council England and Plymouth Culture, Arts of Making will put craft in unexpected spaces and allow the public to interact and collaborate with six internationally-exhibited artists. 

In addition to Bertola the festival will feature live installations, events and performances by Keith Harrison, Owl Project, Mah Rana, Clare Twomey and Richard William Wheater.

Bertola will use dust to create a patterned carpet in one of the rooms at Mount Edgcumbe House. Visitors will be able to witness her painstakingly create the piece over the course of three days from 13 to 15 September.

The pattern created by the dust will be inspired by the architecture of the house and objects contained within it. Because the pattern will be site-specific this will be the first and only time it will be seen. 

Once installed, ‘Unfurling Splendour VII’ will continue to evolve and grow and visitors will be able to see it between 11am and 4pm on 16, 17, 20, 21, 22 and 23 September.

If anyone has any dust they would like to donate they are asked to deliver it in a sealed bag to the Welcome Desk at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery by Wednesday 2 September.

The dust must be from smoke-free and pet-free households and preferably from carpeted areas.

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery is open from 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday and from 10am to 5pm on Saturdays.
