To help put a smile on children’s faces this International Play Day (7th August), ScS has announced it is donating hundreds of toys to a range of deserving charities across the nation.

The sofa and carpet specialist, ScS, is calling on Plymouth residents to visit its local store, situated in Coypool Retail Park, to vote for which of the following local charities they would like to receive this fantastic donation; Jeremiah’s Journey, St. Luke’s Hospice Plymouth or Hugs From Henry.

Voting opens on International Play Day, which celebrates the importance of imaginative play in children’s lives and will close on Saturday 31st August.

The chosen charity will receive a bumper delivery of fun and interactive toys to help bring happiness to hundreds of deserving youngsters, including items like Lego, creative art and crafts supplies, puzzle and card games, toy dolls and action figures, as well as sensory toys.

David Knight, CEO of ScS, said: “We are proud to support our local community and as a business it is incredibly important to us that we give back and contribute to local projects. It is our absolute pleasure to be delivering toys during the summer holidays and helping hundreds of children to enjoy play time.

“We want to offer local people the chance to nominate the charity that will benefit from our Big Toy Bonanza. Simply vote in store throughout August and let us know which local cause you would like to support. We can’t wait to welcome everyone into store as well as help create a little summer holiday magic.”

Steve Statham, Chief Executive of St. Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, said: “St Luke’s is caring for more and more parents of young children so our specialist support for these families is needed more than ever. Our dedicated Patches Family and Children’s Support Worker has the experience and skills to communicate with children in a sensitive, age-appropriate way that can make a big difference to the way they process what’s happening and come to terms with their loss in the longer term.

“The play-room at our specialist unit is a bright, uplifting space where children can enjoy the kind of fun activities that encourage them to express their feelings. New toys will help them at such a challenging time, bringing joy and making an important difference to young hearts and minds.”

Julie Spencer, Operations Manager of Jeremiah’s Journey, said: “The Charity is supporting more and more children every year and the work we do has proven invaluable to so many. To see children being enabled to deal with their feelings and emotions is a tremendous achievement by the dedicated staff that work with them.

“The work we do will sadly always be needed. With this in mind we are looking at improving what we do with our work being based from research but toys and books will always be needed and we can’t thank you enough for nominating us.”

Jeremiah’s Journey plays a vital role in the support of children, young people and families suffering from bereavement or the anticipated death of a close family member. Its Stepping Stones Groups run throughout the year and support children in dealing with the feelings they are experiencing when grieving. Toys and books play an important part of communication during these sessions for those that find it hard to talk about how they feel. It starts their journey to being able to communicate in a safe place and be supported by our professional and experienced staff and volunteers. Jeremiah’s Journey is also able to work in schools and groups as well as 1:1’s with children at their home. Toys make a massive difference to children  - it also brings a smile to their faces

The compassionate end of life care St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth provides makes a vital difference to people in our community at the most vulnerable of times. Among them are young families helped by our award-winning Patches pre-bereavement service for children facing the heart-breaking loss of mum or dad.

Hugs From Henry is a Plymouth based charity which helps families in the PL postcode who have a child with rare childhood cancers. Whether emotional support, making a memory or helping families keep in touch, Hugs From Henry provides them with a place to turn.
