Plympton Library will be celebrating World Book Day on Saturday 9 March with a special event showcasing the very best of library services.

The library will be inviting readers of all ages to sing along to nursery rhymes, enjoy live music performances, hunt for treasure, meet an author, watch a film and find out more about what Plymouth City Council’s library service has to offer.

Activities throughout the day include a treasure hunt for the under-10s, website demos, talks and displays from the library’s readers’ group, friendship group and craft group.

Plympton Scouts will be talking about their community work and opportunities for young people to get involved and Plympton Gardening Club will be hosting a display and answering questions from people keen to get the best out of their gardens.

The WRVS volunteer service will be promoting opportunities to help older people in the community throughout the day and historic illustrated books from the Central Library’s treasured Moxon Collection will also be on display.

The programme for the day includes:

  • 9.30am to 10am: Live choral singing
  • 10.30am to 11am: Rhymetime – rhymes and songs for the under-fives
  • 11am to midday: Demonstration of online reference resources
  • 11.15am to midday: Meet Sherford Bears author Debbie Cullen (for seven to 11-year-olds)
  • 1pm to 2pm: ‘John Gould’s Birds of Europe’ – a short illustrated talk about this book, from the Moxon Collection
  • 1pm to 2pm: Demonstration of online family history resources
  • 2pm to 3pm: Demonstration of online reference resources
  • 2.30pm to 3.30pm: ‘The Way We Live’ – a short film about the rebuilding of Plymouth after World War Two
