While some work-related stress is unavoidable, how you deal with it will decide whether you become stressed out as a result and can mean the difference between success and failure. Everjobs, the new online career portal and professional development platform focused on emerging markets, asserts that effective stress management has a direct knock-on effect on productivity, motivation and all-round wellbeing. Taking these simple steps to harness your stress levels in the workplace will ensure you stay levelheaded and don’t reach breaking point.

1. Mind over matter

Jotting down your thoughts, ideas and anxieties in a notebook or journal can aid in bringing outer clarity to your inner obscurity. Write freely and frankly without thinking about spelling or grammar; remember, no one is going to read it or judge you. Not only can it result in knowing yourself better, but articulating problems and disagreements both within the workplace and in your personal life might just give you the resolve you were looking for.

2. Deskercise!

Just because you're on the nine to five doesn’t mean you should let your fitness slide. We bring you deskercising: a quick-fix, sure-fire way to ensure you’re meeting your daily 20 minute exercise quota. Aside from the numerous mini-routines you can perform while sitting at your desk, make the effort to get on your feet, walk around, use the stairs instead of the elevator, and actually interact with your colleagues instead of emailing them.

3. Sort it out and break it down

There’s nothing more satisfying than compartmentalizing your tasks and breaking them down into manageable chunks before ticking them off one by one. There are plenty of free online tools that can help you create and prioritize lists for work and personal use - we recommend Wunderlist.

4. Food is not your friend - well, not always.

Succumbing to excessive snacking will only make you feel better for a short period, and we’re all familiar with the guilt that soon follows. This doesn’t mean banning all food cravings, but rather giving into them in moderation. Find other ways to feed your feelings, from distracting yourself with reading, calling a friend or going for a walk.

5. Fake it ‘til you make it

Body language is one of the biggest factors that influences how others tend to perceive us, as well as how we see ourselves. Standing straight with your shoulders back - even when you’re not feeling most confident - will project a more radiant image and may even have an impact on your chances for success.
