The Mayor of Great Torrington, Cllr Mrs Diana Davey, “cut the ribbon” today (10 May) at the official opening of re-located Torrington Post Office at Gilletts SPAR, 13 High Street, Torrington, EX38 8HN.

This was one of the last public engagements for the out-going Mayor and her consort Cllr Mrs Margaret Brown. It was an occasion that the Town Council was delighted to attend as the community was very keen to retain a Post Office in the centre of the town. The branch has moved a short distance along the road.

The Mayor of Great Torrington, Cllr Mrs Diana Davey, said: “There had been concerns that we might lose Torrington Post Office from the centre of the town. A Post Office is very important to a community and we are thrilled to have kept a Post Office and with the advantage of much longer opening hours. It is now open seven days a week from early until late. This makes it very convenient to visit.”

The community is also benefitting from significantly extended opening hours as the new branch is open Monday - Sunday: 8am – 8pm.

This means that the branch is now open an extra 52 hours of Post Office service a week including all-day Sunday morning and Saturday afternoon. It is also open significantly earlier and would close later every day. These changes make it more convenient for customers to visit.

Phil Darch, Operations Director for Gillets SPAR, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Post Office customers to our convenience store, which will provide a wide range of Post Office services alongside our retail offer throughout the opening hours of our store, making life easier for the community of Torrington. We have already received great feedback from customers since the branch relocated at the end of April.”

The new branch offers customers a wide range of Post Office services, from posting letters and parcels to collecting and returning online shopping items. Customers can also take advantage of a wide range of banking services including cash withdrawals and balance enquiries for customers of all the main UK banks. Car tax renewal and on demand and pre-order foreign currency are also available.

The previous branch at 7 High Street, Torrington, closed with The Postmaster’s agreement.
