As part of ‘City Centre Clean Week’ (4 to 8 April), a team of eight stalwart City Centre cleaners clocked-up over 264.85 miles between them.

In addition to their normal duties and upgrading the bins throughout the city with larger capacity ones, the team managed to transform Plymouth’s empty and rather muddy, Civic Centre pond to its former glory and rid the Civic Centre building of graffiti and stickers.

It has made a huge, visible difference to an area which has always been popular with both office workers and shoppers to sit, chat and relax – particularly in the summer.

Jon Walton, Plymouth’s City Centre Manager said: “The team do a great job keeping the City centre clean and tidy throughout the year.  We thought it would be a good idea to find out just how much they achieved during Clean Week by gathering some statistics.”

Some surprising facts emerged from the team’s combined 307 hour working week:

  • For the period of the five day clean-up, the cleaning operatives wore pedometers.  Between them, they achieved 550930 steps, which is equivalent to 264.85 miles (426.85 km) – more than the distance from Plymouth to London.
  • The total amount of waste collected from the City Centre’s designated Business Improvement District (an area which includes Drake Circus, The High Street, Plymouth City Market and the Independent Quarter), weighed in at a hefty 4.2 tonnes (4200kg).
  • The hot-wash pressure washer used by the team consumed a massive 19,000 litres of water.
  • 3.2 tonnes of leaf litter was removed from the Civic pond.

“The team have worked really well to deliver these improvements, across the City Centre” said Pete Crocker, Area Supervisor, Street Services, “I was really encouraged by the group moral and willingness to support this event.”

Jon Walton concluded; “First impressions are so important. A lot of people visit our Ocean City throughout the year – coming along for events like Transat, or to simply enjoy our waterfront, culture and hospitality.  A lot of time, effort and resource is put in to market and sell our city as a desirable time-out destination.  Without a clean and secure city centre, all this would be to no avail, so I am really grateful to the team for their continued hard work.”
