A £10million project to reinforce and upgrade a post-war 33kV power network in Plymouth is underway.

Western Power Distribution (WPD), the electricity distributor for the region, is committed to investing in its network to further improve supply reliability and customer service levels.

The first stage of the initiative involves updating 48 kilometres of cables over 17 circuits. The project is set to be completed by 2020.

“This initiative is part of WPD’s ongoing asset replacement programme – work that will further safeguard electricity supplies for customers for years to come,” said WPD Project Engineer Gary Beasley, who is managing the scheme.

The upgrading is part of WPD’s commitment to invest over £7billion on the electricity network between now and 2023.
